About Us

Welcome to the website for the Music Graduate Students’ Association (MGSA) at the University of Toronto. We are a group of graduate students dedicated to representing and supporting graduate students and their needs at the Faculty of Music. We provide services and resources for students and clubs, hold regular meetings for graduate students, and advocate for music students in university-wide meetings. Executive Committee

Sophia Wang

President

Sophia Wang is a PhD candidate in Music Education at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include policy, cross-sectoral involvement, and paradigm shifts in music education. Sophia’s on-going dissertation research examines how non-state actors from the private sector and social economy shape the provision of public school music education in Canada, through the vantage point of school music festivals as deeply embedded, cross-sectoral events and networks. Her doctoral studies are supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada CGS-D and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. Sophia is an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT), flutist, and alumna of the University of Toronto (Mus.Bac. ’18, MA ’23) and Queen’s University (B.Ed. ’19).

Jude Leschyshyn

Vice-President, Internal

Jude Leschyshyn (he/him) is a Master’s student in Musicology. His primary research interests include 19th- and 20th-century pianism and piano music, particularly that of France, Spain, and Russia. Beyond these, he is an enthusiast of jazz, free improvisation, philosophy, and 20th-century Latin American history. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Saskatchewan, with professional experience as a teacher, performer, and composer. His research is supported by SSHRC.

Isaiah Chadney

Treasurer

Isaiah is a recent graduate of the University of Lethbridge, having completed his Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance under the instruction of Dr. Josh Davies. In the upcoming year, Isaiah will be pursuing his MA in Musicology at the University of Toronto, where he aims to explore the sociological relationships surrounding western art music and other popular and world music stylings.
